IAES Senior Manager, Ms Ibtissem Jouini, together with Marc Shut, Senior Innovation Portfolio Management Advisor at CGIAR, contributed a new blog on why scaling needs its own evaluative logic that appeared on the BetterEvaluation online portal. 

Scaling is one of the most used and least precisely defined concepts in international development. Donors fund it. Researchers study it. Programs are designed around it. Yet, when it comes to evaluating whether scaling efforts actually work, the evaluation field has been largely silent. 

Drawing on the CGIAR IAES Technical Note on evaluating scaling efforts, the blog explains why scaling evaluation needs its own evaluative logic, and to outline what that looks like in practice. 

The key message: What we scale in agricultural development today will shape food systems, livelihoods, and ecosystems for decades. Getting scaling right matters. Evaluating it right is how we learn whether we succeeded and how to do better.
