Exploring potato diversity during ISDC’s visit to Peru.

ISDC held its first in-person meeting of 2026 at the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima. The visit also provided an opportunity to explore Peru’s extraordinary potato diversity.

More than just a Crop. Native potatoes support:

  • Biodiversity
  • Food security & nutrition
  • Climate resilience
  • Andean cultural heritage

Their diversity can help strengthen more sustainable food systems. More than 4,000 varieties of native potatoes grow in the Andean highlands of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. ISDC had the opportunity to learn about some of these varieties, here are few examples:
