Abstract
As the Secretariat for the Independent Science for Development Council (ISDC) and Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA), and implementing CGIAR’s independent evaluation function, IAES has adopted a set of principles providing a common framework for responsible use of AI. Considering lessons learned in implementation to date across IAES workstreams, learning from ongoing international discussions on responsible use of AI, along with evolving governance, seven principles are included: 1) Human agency and oversight; 2) Transparency; 3) Technical capacity and fitness for purpose; 4) Privacy and data governance; 5) Fairness and inclusion; 6) Social and environmental responsibility; and 7) Independence and accountability.
Throughout its incremental testing and adoption of AI tools, CGIAR Advisory Bodies have been de-facto implementing numerous provisions listed. With the adoption of the principles, the document now serves a common reference point, allowing workstream-specific protocols to develop.
